overviewoverviewfacultyresearchdegree programscoursesstudent resourcesME department The Program in Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota resides within the Institute of Technology. The program draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences along with methods of engineering analysis to specify, predict, and evaluate the performance of industrial and service systems.

The Industrial & Systems Engineering curriculum includes up-to-date core courses taught by top faculty at the forefront in the field; the graduate program emphasizes individual thesis and study projects closely supervised by a faculty member. The curriculum is further enhanced by collaboration with faculty from the Carlson School of Management and Mechanical Engineering.

Exciting research and internship opportunities are available to students through University partnerships with government and local industry. Many Industrial & Systems Engineering graduates go on to work for successful companies such as IBM, Honeywell, Northwest Airlines, Ford Motor Co., Anderson Consulting, Intel, and 3M.

Participating faculty in Industrial & Systems Engineering have a diverse body of research expertise in decision support systems, operations research, manufacturing and service operations, supply chain management, and ergonomics.

The Industrial & Systems Engineering graduate program offers both MS and PhD degrees. MS students choose between an IE track and an SE track. University of Minnesota undergraduates can earn both an MS in Industrial & Systems Engineering and a BS in Mechanical Engineering in five years through the integrated BS/MS program. In addition, ME undergraduates can participate in the ISyE option, in which technical electives are selected from Industrial & Systems Engineering courses.
