Research

Principal research interests are in the area of human factors/ergonomics, including studies of human information processing, decision-making, motor control, and human machine systems. Studies are both analytical and experimental and use quantitative modeling of human performance characteristics, capabilities, and limitations in various task situations in order to provide a proper match between the operator and his or her tasks.

Additional areas of work include the application of ergonomics to workstation design, categorical data analysis, safety, and the traditional industrial engineering area of methods engineering and work measurement. Work is both theoretical and applied, with applications relevant to real industrial settings.

Research Laboratory

  • Human Factors

    Research focuses on human motor control of positioning tasks, reaction time for multiple stimuli (inputs), tracking tasks, and psychophysical processes. A digitizer-PC-timer unit is used for automated data collection and analysis of discrete arm movement tasks typical of manufacturing assembly operations. Additional equipment includes instruments for making certain physiological measurements and for measuring work environment factors. The development of the power law of motor control and of human choice reactions resulted from studies conducted in the lab.
