ResearchMajor research areas include optimization concepts applied to the design and operational management of production systems. Problems of resource allocation, capacity sizing and layout of production facilities, specification of quality dimensions, logistics support, and material flow are some of the important elements that have been considered within the scope of optimization. More recently, areas of research interest have included CAD/CAM, computer-aided decision support systems (D.S.S.), and artificial intelligence. Work is being done to integrate problem-solving techniques and tools with data and knowledge bases on an on-going basis, where various knowledge bases are invoked automatically following a logical reasoning process. Decomposition techniques are being extended to multi-lateral, multi-objective decision problems, particularly as applied to design. An elaborate computer-aided decision support system is under development for assisting common carrier trucking companies' middle management in their day-to-day management problems. Scheduling is an area which holds great promise of benefit from a computer-assisted system. Selected Publications"Challenges to Exploit the Internet for Engineering Education."
